Environment

Silk Road Centre's environment program is grounded in the vision of protecting Pakistan's cultural and natural heritage in order to improve the welfare and prospects for the people of Pakistan. The government and civil society institutions in Pakistan have been successful in bringing issues related to the natural heritage to public attention, but the country continues to face enormous environmental challenges.

Cities in Pakistan are under extreme pressure of urban congestion and problems of deteriorating air and water quality. Its rural areas are faced with rapid deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and land degradation. Due to global warming the Karakoram-Hindukush-Himalayan glaciers are melting fast threatening water inflows into the Indus River System.

Our environment program aims at building knowledge and capacity through collaboration and exchanges to conserve the diversity of Pakistan's natural heritage and promote the equitable and sustainable use of its natural resources. The Centre seeks to support the government and engage industry, civil society and public to address most critical environmental challenges. We conduct research and create opportunities for exchanges of research and practices related to the environment, fragile ecosystems and climate change.

Our Environment Program covers the following key thematic areas:

  • Environment Policy, Governance and Reforms
  • Climate Change
  • Equitable Access to Water
  • Environmental Education
  • Associative Cultural Landscape
