Celebrating Pakistan’s Cultural Diversity

WHAT IS CULTURAL DIVERSITY?

Cultural diversity is the array of cultural differences that exist among groups of people. Cultural diversity can be a result of natural circumstances, for example, climate and or geography. It can also be a product of social circumstances such as demographics or use of technology. Cultural diversity is also known as multiculturalism, which values cultural identities and believes that every culture and ethnic group can make valuable contribution to the progress of humanity.

WHY WE NEED TO VALUE CULTURAL DIVERSITY?

Pakistani society is a beautiful blend and a tapestry of many cultures. From ancient times, Pakistan has remained a cultural hub and the home of ancient civilizations. For example, in Balochistan, about 30 kilometers from Sibi, the country had the earliest agricultural and pastoral communities in South Asia. These were the first inhabitants of Mehrgarh dating back to around 6500 BC. Pakistan’s northern region, which is located on crossroads of Asia, occupies a unique place in nurturing cross-cultural connection. Throughout its history, the region has received “cultural influences from China. Central Asia, Kashmir, Tibet, Iran, Afghanistan and India.” Centuries old settlements, and historical and cultural processes have contributed to make Pakistan as one of the most multicultural and multilingual countries of the world. After the advent of Islam cultural landscape of the country has been enriched by Islamic civilization and Sufi traditions. The cultural diversity of Pakistan is truly remarkable, as many different ethnic and cultural groups have contributed to the socio-economic development of the country. With the contributions of the many cultures Pakistan can even be more united in achieving the nation’s common goals and become a democratic, enlightened and pluralistic Muslim majority state, which has the vision Quaid-i-Azam  Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

HOW CAN WE CONTRIBUTE TO PROMOTE CULTURAL DIVERSITY?

We can do a number of things to promote cultural diversity in Pakistan:

  • Talk to someone speaking another Pakistani language to learn about local festivals.
  • Read a book to explore the linguistic diversity of Pakistan.
  • Explore the life and personalities of leaders of the Pakistan Movement who came from diverse cultures.
  • Learn about another religion practiced in Pakistan.
  • Engage in dialogue with people from different Pakistani cultures to know more about their customs.
